From Autonomous Lifestyle to a Pluralized View of Society
From Autonomous Lifestyle to a Pluralized View of Society
German lifestyle research, combining sub-disciplines of sociology of culture and studies on social structure followed a unique path in the last 25 years. Many associate the introduction of the concept of lifestyle—specific to German sociology and to the study of German society—into the sociological discourse precisely with Ulrich Beck’s widely discussed piece ‘Beyond status and class’, published in 1983. Th e abundant literature on social structure and inequality published in the last 25 years can be thematised along many different angles; this paper focuses on autonomy of lifestyle, which is probably the most important one among them.
