Bricolage of Meaning

On the Subjective Appropriation of Lifestyles

Hitzler describes the process of personal identity-construction by coupling the individualization argument of Beck with the phenomenological theory of the lifeworld. He interprets the individual as a bricoleur of meaning who dissembles—as in a collage—his own lifeworld out of elements of the fragmented social reality and chooses between competing systems of meaning along aesthetic options. Hitzler situates lifestyle in this construction process and discusses its role along the ‘bricolage-existence’.
