Unspectacular Subculture?
Transgession and Mundanity in the Global Extreme Metal Scene
According to the CCCS model of subculture studies, subculture is defined by its “spectacularity”; however, this is the very attribute that necessarily leads to its end since thus it is perpetually subjected to the special attention of the media industry and the state. Critics of CCCS rightly reinterpreted the values of the “normal”, “unspectacular” youth culture, and revealed that even the producers of the spectacular style may lack a strong commitment to the spectacular subculture. Nevertheless, the spectacular subculture keeps attracting the interest scholars at least to the same degree as it does the media or the state. This article attempts to explore how the complex relation between everydayness and spectacularity operates in the global extreme metal scene.
